The county is in the northernmost part of Minnesota and shares its northern border with Canada, specifically with the provinces of Ontario and Manitoba. Koochiching is known for its vast forests, pristine lakes, and the majestic Rainy River, which flows westward across the county to Lake of the Woods.
The county's name, Koochiching, is derived from either the Ojibwe or the Cree language, and it roughly translates to "place of inlets" or "place of small narrows", referring to the geographical features of the area. The county seat is International Falls, a city that is often referred to as the "Icebox of the Nation" due to its exceptionally cold winter temperatures. Despite the cold, the area is a favorite destination for those seeking outdoor activities, such as fishing, hunting, and snowmobiling.
