BIRCHDALE, MN – A grassroots advocacy group, Save Indus, has taken a stand against the proposed closure of the Indus School, a beloved educational institution serving the northern Minnesota community. The ISD #363 School Board voted 4-2 on March 8th, 2023, to deem the school unnecessary, a decision that has sparked widespread concern and opposition. For generations, the Indus School has been more than just an educational institution. It has served as a pillar of the community, providing not only a quality education but also life skills and a supportive system to area students. The school's closure would have far-reaching effects, extending beyond the standard K-12 education system, impacting many rural families who rely on the school for their children's education. In response to the proposed closure, the community has rallied together to form Save Indus, a coalition of students, parents, alumni, local business leaders, and concerned citizens. The group's mission is to preserve the Indus School, believing in the significant impact it has on the lives of students, staff, families, and the broader community. One of the unique aspects of the Indus School is its commitment to providing students with various opportunities to engage in school clubs, such as the Student Council, National Honor Society, and Yearbook Club. More importantly, students are not only encouraged to participate but also to take on leadership roles, fostering a sense of responsibility and community spirit. Beyond the educational and developmental benefits, the Indus School's strength lies in its close-knit community. At Indus, every student is seen, heard, and valued, which is why many are passionate about saving their school. The Save Indus initiative underscores this sentiment, showing how communities can come together to fight for their educational institutions, proving that there are indeed "no strangers at Indus". Save Indus is calling for support from anyone who values the role of community-based education in rural areas. They have an account at Border Bank where supporters can make donations payable to "Save Indus School". The International Falls branch and the Baudette branch are aware of the cause and are prepared to handle donations. Supporters are also urged to voice their concerns at the upcoming public hearing, thereby participating directly in the fight to save the school. The public hearing took place April 3rd at the Indus school. Many ppl spoke but no questions were answered. To date there has been zero information regarding our impending closure. Just the vote on March 8th and the public hearing April 3rd to which he had a police escort to both meetings. He has not even been in the Indus building since February. We have tried scheduling union intervention meetings and they get canceled last minute. Comments are closed.
