Kootasca Community Action is a non-profit organization that was founded in 1965 by local citizens to help individuals, families, and communities fight the multiple causes and challenges of poverty. Their mission is to “build community to end poverty” by providing comprehensive crisis support, anti-poverty services, and partner referral. They also aim to change the attitudes and mindsets about poverty, the systems that affect people in poverty, and engage all community members in creating a community that provides opportunities for everyone.
Kootasca Community Action offers various programs for different needs and populations, such as community engagement, early childhood, health and safety, homeowners, and renters. Some of their programs include Big View Circles of Support, Early Head Start, Head Start, Teenage Parent Program, MnSure, Safelink Wireless, Social Security Advocacy, Energy Assistance Program, Emergency Heating Repair, Homebuyer Education, Weatherization, Crisis Rent Assistance, Fairview Horizon Apartments, and Transitional Housing. Kootasca Community Action has two locations in Minnesota: one in Itasca County and one in Koochiching County.
