Backus Community Center is a historic building located in International Falls, Minnesota. It was built in 1936 as a high school and later converted into a community center in 2002 by the non-profit organization Citizens for Backus/AB1. The center offers various programs and services for residents of all ages, such as arts, culture, recreation, wellness, and life-long learning.
One of the main features of the center is the Community Café, which serves free, hot, nutritious meals every Tuesday and Thursday night to anyone who needs them. The café aims to reduce hunger and build a stronger community in the area. The center also hosts a child care center called Rainy River Rugrats, which serves children from 6 weeks to 6 years old with a state-accredited curriculum. The center also has a grand auditorium that can accommodate up to 1,200 people. The auditorium is used for various events and performances, such as concerts, musicals, plays, talent shows, and special occasions. The center also has professional office space and meeting/event space that can be rented for various purposes. The center is supported by donations, memberships, grants, and volunteers.
Kootasca Community Action is a non-profit organization that was founded in 1965 by local citizens to help individuals, families, and communities fight the multiple causes and challenges of poverty. Their mission is to “build community to end poverty” by providing comprehensive crisis support, anti-poverty services, and partner referral. They also aim to change the attitudes and mindsets about poverty, the systems that affect people in poverty, and engage all community members in creating a community that provides opportunities for everyone.

Some of their programs include Big View Circles of Support, Early Head Start, Head Start, Teenage Parent Program, MnSure, Safelink Wireless, Social Security Advocacy, Energy Assistance Program, Emergency Heating Repair, Homebuyer Education, Weatherization, Crisis Rent Assistance, Fairview Horizon Apartments, and Transitional Housing. Kootasca Community Action has two locations in Minnesota: one in Itasca County and one in Koochiching County. Koochiching Aging Options is a non-profit organization that serves older adults and their families in Koochiching County, Minnesota. It offers various services, programs and resources to help seniors and caregivers meet their needs and challenges.
Some of the services that Koochiching Aging Options provides are: Groceries to You!, a program that delivers groceries to homebound seniors; Caregiver Consultant/Dementia Support Specialist, a program that assists those who are helping an older county resident with cognitive issues; Good Visit Program, a program that links volunteers with socially isolated individuals for friendly visitation; and Memory Café, a social gathering place for those living with memory loss and their care partners. Koochiching Aging Options also provides information and referral to other service providers in the county, such as transportation, home health care, legal assistance, nutrition, housing and more.
