The International Falls Figure Skating Club (IFFSC) has been a staple in the local community since its establishment in 1983. Located at the Bronco Arena in International Falls, Minnesota, the club is dedicated to promoting and supporting the sport of figure skating for enthusiasts of all ages and skill levels.
IFFSC offers various membership categories, including Senior, Family, Associate, Honorary, and Alumni, to cater to a diverse group of skating enthusiasts. The club is not just a place to practice figure skating but also a community where members can learn, grow, and share their experiences. The club is managed by a Board of Directors, consisting of fifteen elected members who are responsible for overseeing the club’s operations, finances, and property. They ensure that the club runs smoothly, adhering to the policies of the United States Figure Skating Association and Learn to Skate USA. In essence, the International Falls Figure Skating Club is more than a skating rink; it’s a hub for the local community of skating enthusiasts to come together, practice, learn, and enjoy the sport in a supportive and friendly environment.
Backus Community Center is a historic building located in International Falls, Minnesota. It was built in 1936 as a high school and later converted into a community center in 2002 by the non-profit organization Citizens for Backus/AB1. The center offers various programs and services for residents of all ages, such as arts, culture, recreation, wellness, and life-long learning.
One of the main features of the center is the Community Café, which serves free, hot, nutritious meals every Tuesday and Thursday night to anyone who needs them. The café aims to reduce hunger and build a stronger community in the area. The center also hosts a child care center called Rainy River Rugrats, which serves children from 6 weeks to 6 years old with a state-accredited curriculum. The center also has a grand auditorium that can accommodate up to 1,200 people. The auditorium is used for various events and performances, such as concerts, musicals, plays, talent shows, and special occasions. The center also has professional office space and meeting/event space that can be rented for various purposes. The center is supported by donations, memberships, grants, and volunteers.
Kootasca Community Action is a non-profit organization that was founded in 1965 by local citizens to help individuals, families, and communities fight the multiple causes and challenges of poverty. Their mission is to “build community to end poverty” by providing comprehensive crisis support, anti-poverty services, and partner referral. They also aim to change the attitudes and mindsets about poverty, the systems that affect people in poverty, and engage all community members in creating a community that provides opportunities for everyone.
Kootasca Community Action offers various programs for different needs and populations, such as community engagement, early childhood, health and safety, homeowners, and renters. Some of their programs include Big View Circles of Support, Early Head Start, Head Start, Teenage Parent Program, MnSure, Safelink Wireless, Social Security Advocacy, Energy Assistance Program, Emergency Heating Repair, Homebuyer Education, Weatherization, Crisis Rent Assistance, Fairview Horizon Apartments, and Transitional Housing. Kootasca Community Action has two locations in Minnesota: one in Itasca County and one in Koochiching County.
